Kennedy’s Suicide Bomber

History 1 episode • Raw Cut • Smithsonian Channel

In 1960 a lone assassin planned a deadly attempt on the life of President-Elect John F Kennedy. With a Buick packed with dynamite, nothing was going to stop him.

Using diary excerpts, never-before-seen Secret Service documents and a shocking historical reimagining, Kennedy’s Suicide Bomber tells the story of the man who came within moments of killing JFK. Using the would-be assassin’s own diary entries, court records, and eyewitness accounts this gripping documentary uncovers the forgotten story. It reconstructs the near-miss with forensic precision, simulating the explosion using a period vehicle and authentic materials to reveal the devastating impact had the bomber succeeded.

Overshadowed by a tragic air disaster on the same day, the attempt never made headlines. The assassin was quietly arrested, institutionalised, and eventually released without trial. We expose the day history almost changed forever—and the man whose rage nearly rewrote it.
